The hydrolysis of zirconium alkoxides with secondary or tertiary alkoxide groups Zr(OR)/sub 4/, where R = Pr/sup i/, Bu/sup s/, Bu/sup t and Am/ sup t/, was studied. The hydrolysis leads to the formation of polymeric zirconium oxide alkoxides having low number average degrees of polymerization. The variation of number-average degree of polymerization as a function of the degree of hydrolysis for zirconium isopropoxide and zirconium sec-butoxide conformed to the requirements of a structural model for the polymers based on octahedrally 6 co-ordinated zirconium. At high degrees of hydrolysis it appears that highly solvated species are present and that hydrolysis may be incomplete in solution. (P.C.H.)
