STUDIES ON ALKOXIDES AND ALKYLSILYLOXIDES OF URANIUM (thesis)
The preparation and properties are reported for a range of alkoxides and trialkylsilyloxides of quadrivalent, quinquevalent, and sexivalent uranium. Molecular weights were measured ebulliscopically in benzene, and structures are proposed for the polymeric species. The following new compounds were prepared: alcoholates of uradium tetra chloride with the general formula UCl, 4ROH where R = Me, Et, and Pr/sup i/ by reaction between uranium tetrachloride and the appropriate alcohol; the uranium tetraalkoxides U(OR)/sub 4/ where R = Pr/sup n/ and Pr/sup i/, by the action of either lithium alkoxide or sodium alkoxide on uranium tetrachloride, UCl/sub 4/ + 4LiOR = U(OR)/sub 4/ + 4LiCl; the uranium penta-alkoxides U(OR)/sub 5/ where R = Bu/sup i/, Am/sup i/, Am/sup act/, Am/sup neo/ , Bu/sup s/, CHMePr/sup n/, CHMePr/sup i/, CHEt/sub 2/, Bu/sup t/, Am/sup t/ , CMe/sub 2/Pr/sup n/, CMePr/sup 1/ >s, CMeEt/sub 2/, CMeEtPr/sup i/, and CEt/sub 3/ by the alcoholysis of uranium pentaethoxide, U(OEt)/sub 5/ + 5 ROH = U(OR)/sub 5/ + 5 EtOH; the solvated compounds U(OBu/sup t/)/sub 5/, Bu/sup t/OH, and U(OBu/ sup t/)/sub 5/, C/sub 5/H/sub 5/ >iN; the mixed alkoxides U(OEt)(OBu/sup t/)i and U(OEt)/sub 2/(OBu/sup t/)/sub 3/; the uranium pentaltis-trialkylsilyloxides U(OSiR/sub 3/)/sub 5/ where R3 = Me/sub 3/, Me/sub 2/Et, MeEt/sub 2/, and Et/sub 3/ by the silanolysis of uranium pentaethoxide; urarium hexa-t-amyloxide U(OAm/ sup t/)/sub 6/ by alcoholysis; and the uranium hexakis-trialkulsilyloxides U(OSiR/ sub 3/)6/sub /ere R3>i = Me/sub 3/, Me/sub 2/Et, MeEt/sub 2/, and Et/sub 3/ by the silanolysis of uranium hexaethoxide.
