REGENERATION OF /theta/$sub 1$ MESONS IN A THIRTY-INCH PROPANE BUBBLE CHAMBER (thesis)

A beam of theta /sub 2/ mesons was produced by passing a beam of l.l Bev/c negative pions through a liquid hydrogen target and accepting the neutral reaction products in the forward direction after allowing the theta /sub 1/ component to decay. The resultant beam was filtered through four inches of lead and was then observed in a 30-inch propane bubble chamber. Regeneration of the theta /sub 1/ component was observed both in lead and iron plates inside the bubble chamber and in the propane itself. About 200 regenerated j theta /0 mesons were identified by their characteristic O-value and decay rate. The observed angular distribution of the theta /sub 1/ mesons demonstrated three types of regenerationof incoherent, from individual nucleons; diffraction, from all of the nucleons in a nucleus acting coherently; and transmission, from coherent action of all the matter in the plate as a whole. The Gell-Manun-Pais particle mixture hypothesis is thus further substantiated. (auth)
