A collimated beam of 70-Mev gamma rays was passed through a sample of argon gas. The alpha -particles from the Ar/sup 40/ ( gamma )S/sup 36/ reaction were counted on a grid ionization chamber which had been calibrated by counting alpha -particles of natural uranium. The maximum range of the particles counted at a pressure of l atmosphere was 9 cm which corresponds to an energy of 2.3 Mev for protons, 3.05 Mev for deuterons, 3.54 Mev for tritons, 8.l Mev for He/sup 3/ and 9.08 Mev for He particles. It was possible to count the particles in the 3.5 to 9.0-Mev region by varying the negative bias on the grid. At a pressure of l, l.3, 2 and 3 atmospheres of argon in the chamber, the energy maxima were found to be 4.6, 4.87, 4.4 and 4.3 Mev, and the halfwidths were 2.62, 2.72, 3.20 and 3.65 Mev. The effect of counting protons, deuterons and tritons was small because of the small difference in spectral distribution at various pressures. The experimental energy spectrum of alpha particles having a maximum at 4.8 Mev and a haif-width of 3.3 Mev was compared with the theoretical spectrum calculated from statistical theory for the Ar/sup 40/( gamma ) S/sup 36/ reaction. The experimental maximum is shifted by 2.0 Mev toward the lower energies. This discrepancy can be explained by a contribution from the Ar/sup 40/( gamma , alpha n)S/sup 36/ re action, or by assuming a higher value for the penetrability of the coulomb barrier. (TTT).
