METHOD AND DEVICE ENSURING THE SAFETY OF NUCLEAR REACTORS IN PARTICULAR OF REACTORS COOLED BY CARBON DIOXIDE

Patent ·
OSTI ID:4813274
The French Patent 1,226,423 describes an auxiliary cooler for a reactor cooled by carbon dioxide, this cooler being built in a by-pass of the cooling circuit and enclosing a condensed cooling medium, constituted preferably also by carbon dioxide. This cooling medium is able to absorb the heat developed in the event of a reactor accident, and said liquid carbon dioxide is formed on the surfaces of cooling elements that are in connection with a refrigerating apparatus comprising one or several cold-accumulators. The present addition describes several forms of such auxiliary coolers, with cold-accumulators each enclosing a mass that can be held at a very low temperatare. In a first form of the invention, this mass may be divided into elements, e.g., balls, cylindrical rings or bricks; in a second form of the invention, this mass may be liquid or plastic e.g., liquefied gas, mineral oil, glycerine, tar, or may be constituted by a mixture of finely divided solid material with a liquid or a plastic material.
