In order to compensate the effects of the negative temperature coefficient of reactivity and of the xenon and samarium that are developed during the reactor operation, a burnable poison is added to the fuel elements of a nuclear reactor, while a soluble poison of controlled concentration is maintained in the pressurized water constituting the moderator and circulating through the reactor core. This soluble poison comprises preferably boric acid, the burnable poison comprising boron. This burnable poison in the fuel elements may be distributed in the nuclear fuel or in the canning material.
