A nuclear reactor is described comprising a tank for the liquid moderator. A number of fuel element units constituted preferably by pipes traverse this moderating tank and include the fissile material, and the reactor coolant composed of liquid metals, circulates in these pipes. The moderator is preferably a deuterium compound at atmospheric pressure. The said pipes are thermally insulated from the moderator liquid. The pipes are connected together at their ends by headers.
