SYSTEM AND INSTALLATION FOR GAS COOLED NUCLEAR REACTORS FOR CHARGING AND DISCHARGING THE FUEL ELEMENTS

The installation comprises two gas-tight containers, one for charging and the other for discharging. These containers may be interconnected via a compressor or like machine so that it is possible to pass a part of the gas from one container to the other, the total quantity of gas in the containers remaining constant. In this manner the pressure in one of the containers may be made equal to the working pressure in the reactor vessel, while the pressure in the other container is reduced to atmospheric pressure, and vice versa. The transfer of a fuel element from or to the reactor vessel is effected when the pressure in the container in question is equal to the working pressure in the reactor, while the fuel element transfer from or to the outside of the reactor is effected when the pressure in the container in question is equal to the atmospheric pressure.
