The exchange of the phosphorus-bonded hydrogen with deuterium in D/sub 2/ O was studied for dimethyl-, diethyl- and di-n-propylphosphonate. The kinetics was followed by means of intensity measurements on the proton magnetic resonance spectra of these compounds. The exchange was found to be acid-catalyzed, the rate law ior the reaction being: rate = k/sub H/(phosphonate) (H/sup +) + k/sub w/ (phosphonate). From a comparison oi the data obtained with those found for the oxidation of thc same compounds, it is suggested that the phosphite form of the dialkyl phosphonates serves as a common interimediate for both the exchange and oxidation reactions.
