Compositions are described which has the mechanical properties of a high molecular weight polyethylene at much lower costs. The compositions comprise a graft polymer of polyethylene and a plasticizer in an amount sufficient to impart to the compositions tensile properties characteristic of a high molecular weight polyethylene. The amount of polyethylene in the graft copolymer is 5 to 95 wt% and may be of a low grade; the monomer in the copolymer is one which yields a homopolymer having a Young's modulus higher than that of a high molecular weight polyethylene. The graft copolymer may be prepared with the aid of ionizing radiation. An alternative way of preparation is described in British Patent 884,732. (D.L.C.)
