IMPROVING THE PROPERTIES OF HIGH POLYMER MATERIALS FOR INSULATED WIRES BY IRRADIATION

The effects of irradiation on polyethylene and polywinyl chloride, the irradiation facilities, and the industrial production of insulated wires are discussed. The NST (no strength temperature) of a polyethylene sample having a 2- g/sq mm load increased suddenly at 10/sup 6/ rad and increased to 250 deg C at a dosage of 10/sup 7/ rad. The number of network chains increased rapidly from 10/ sup 6/ rad. A radiation dosage of ~5 x 10/sup 6/ rad was required in order to obtain a thermally improved polyethylene. An increase of ~30 to 40 deg C in the thermal-softening temperature and ~200 deg C increase in the line short-circuit temperature were obtained with an irradiated polyethylene-coated wire. When polyvinyl chloride was irradiated at a high dosage, crosslinking and chain scission occurred at the same time. However, by incorporating other monomers, the crosslinking. of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) can be improved in the lower dosage range. Thus, solvent resistivity, thermal-softening resistivity, and compression resistivity of PVA can be improved. Problems associated with the uniform irradiation of materials are discussed. (OID)
