LEVELS OF Os$sup 18$$sup 8$

Journal Article · · Nuclear Phys.
Ir/sup 188/ was produced by Re/sup 187/( alpha ,3n)Ir/sup 188/ and studied in the Gerholm electron-electron coincidence spectrometer and a conventional gamma-gamma spectrometer, using fastslow electronics. Re/sup 188/ and Re/sup 188m/ were produced by Re/sup 187/(n, gamma )Re/sup 188/ and examined using fast-slow gammagamma coincidence equipment. The weak positon spectrum of Ir/sup 188/ was analyzed and consisted of branches with end points at (1656 plus or minus 10) and (1211 plus or minus 45) kev, yielding Q/sub BETA +/ = (1811 plus or minus 10) kev. Coincidence relations and conversion electron energies, while confirming the main features of previously proposed decay schemes, suggest additional or adjusted states at 2225, 2106, 1846, 1732, and 1461 kev, all populated in the decay of Ir/sup 188/. Tentative levels were suggested at 788, 1941, and 2343 kev. The proposed scheme is compared with the models of Bohr and Mottelson and of Davydov et al.; these comparisons confirm the previous classification of Os/sup 188/ as a transitional or intermediate coupling nucleus, in agreement with its location in the nuclear periodic table between strongly deformed and spherical nuclei.
