SCINTILLATION SPECTROMETER MEASUREMENTS OF CAPTURE GAMMA RAYS FROM NATURAL ELEMENTS. Second Quarterly Report, September 15, 1961 to December 14, 1961

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4811038
A compilation was made of neutron capture gamma ray spectra of naturally occurring elements, covering both the low and the high energy spectral region, using NaI(Tl) scintillation detectors. An external beam from the ARF research reactor is being used as a source of thermal neutrons for this compilation. lmprovements were made to the detection system and experiments were conducted to determine the most suitable crystal sizes to obtain the low energy (less than approximately 1 Mev) capture spectra. To expedite energy calibrations in this low energy region, a set of secondary energy standards were produced from the rhodium and samarium capture spectra; the cadmium capture spectrum is a primary energy standard. Low energy capture gamma ray spectra of scandium, cobalt, rhodium, silver, cadmium, indium, dysprosium, holmium, thulium, ytterbium, lutetium, rhenium, and gold were obtained using the 3" x 3" NaI(Tl) detector. Many previously unreported lines were observed in these spectra. (auth)
