The system rare-earth element-gluconic acid is arbitrarily represented as a four-component system with three reacting components: metal ion, hydrogen ion, and trivalent anion of gluconic acid. The composition of the system is represented by a tetrahedron the base of which is Ma/sup 3+/H/sup +/A/sup 3-/ and the apex is water. A quantitative study was made of two sections of the tetrahedron: Ma/sup 3+/-H/sub 2/A/sup -/H/sub 2/O (M = La, Nd, or Yb) by the method of ion exchange and MA/sup 0/-H/sup +/-H/sub 2/O (M = La, Nd, Sm, Gd, Y, or Yb) by the method of potentiometric titration. Diagrams of complex formaiton were constructed, establishing the domination fields of complexes in systems with lanthanum and ytterbium. (auth)
