SIMPLIFIED SPHERICAL HARMONICS EQUATIONS AND THEIR USE IN SHIELDING PROBLEMS

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4809517
Presented at the Winter Meeting of the American Nuclear Society, San Francisco, California, December l2-l4, l960. In all geometries the spherical harmonics equations can, under special circumstances, be recast as coupled diffusion equations. Conditions necessary for the validity of this transformation are discussed. When the transformation is not rigorously valid, it may nevertheless yield a useful and accurate approximation to the spherical harmonics equations. The approximate equations seem to be adequate for the treatment of shielding problems. (auth)
