PLASMA CONFINEMENT BY RADIOFREQUENCY FIELDS (in French)

The force acting on the boundary of a plasma placed in a r-f field is calculated. Considering the plasma as a dielectric, the force is obtained by a thermodynamic method. Extrapolating the region of validity of this method to the neighborhood of resonance, where dissipation is of importance, it is found that the free energy has a minimum for a density very close to the resonant one. Thus the plasma adjusts its volume so as to retain the resonant density. This prediction is in agreement with experimental results. (auth)
