DEVELOPMENT OF PLUTONIUM BEARING FUEL MATERIALS. Monthly Progress Letter for November 1961

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4809059

Major effort ls reported on chemical processing and product characterization. Material recycle problems were investigated by conducting oxalate precipitations from dilute plutonium nitrate solutions. PuO/sub 2/ was also prepared via the plutonium peroxide route. Continued studies are also reported on UO/sub 2/- PuO/sub 2/ coprecipitation, powder characterizatlon, and coating techniques for deposition of Ni and Cu on PuO/subn 2/. Plasma-torch- produced PuO/sub 2/ spheroids were of good quality but much smaller than the feed material. Initlal fabrication of UO/sub 2/- PuO/sub 2/ is reported and investigation of Pu/sub 2/O/sub 3/ formation during sintering was continued. Research on a near-thermal reactor system was also continued.
