PATHOLOGIC SEQUELLAE IN BEAGLES FOLLOWING CONTINUOUS FEEDING OF Sr$sup 90$ AT A TOXIC LEVEL

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4808747

Beagles were fed Sr/sup 90/ at a constant level (1.83 mu C Sr/sup 90//g dietary Ca) from the onset of fetal ossification to 18 months old. During the treatment period, lymphoblastic sarcoma caused death of 2 dogs after about 1000 rad of skeletal irradiation. In one dog an osteogenic sarcoma occurred in the lumbar region with lung metastases after an accumulated dose of approximately 12000 rads. Aseptic osseous necrosis and circumscribed areas of osteolytic fibrosis were identified as slowly progressive lesions. Excessive ossification in the metaphases of long bone was a constant finding after maturity. One surviving dog has sustained a cumulative dose in excess of 15000 rad and is also exhibiting bone pathology radiographically. Leukocytic elements were moderately depressed (60 to 70% normal), but thrombocytic values were well within normal range. (auth)
