The Influence of Whole-Body Radiation on Renal Hemodynamics in Acute Experiments

Renal function and electrolyte excretion was studied 1 to 3.5 hr after irradiation of dogs with 200 to 800 r. In 6 out of the 9 dogs tested, no change occurred in effective renal plasma flow and glomerular filtration, which confirms the relative resistance of the kidney to the early effects of radiation. However, in 3 animals, clearance of exogenous creatinine and p-aminohippurate decreased. ln these 3 animals, the drop in filtration following irradiation may have resulted from bleeding caused by heparinization of the dogs. Changes in renal hemodynamics showed no relation to the radiation dose; the 3 animals showing a drop in glomerular filtration received 200, 200, and 800 r. Although diuresis remained constant, excretion of Na dropped after irradiatton, so that tubular reabsorption of Na did not appear to be impaired by irradiation. K excretion showed only slight, insignificant changes. (H.H.D.)
