THE URANIUM HEXAFLUORIDE-HYDROGEN FLUORIDE FREEZING POINT CURVE AND ITS APPLICATION TO A METHOD OF ANALYSIS

Technical Report ·
DOI:https://doi.org/10.2172/4807514· OSTI ID:4807514
The freezing point curve for the system uranium hexafluoride--hydrogen fluoride was determined over the range 0.0 to 0.6 wt% hydrogen fluoride and is represented by the equation wt% HF = 0.0841 DELTA t + 0.1020 DELTA t/sup 2/ -- 0.1046 DELTA t/sup 3/ + 0.0363 DELTA t/sup 4/ where DELTA t is the depression of the freezing point of pure uranium hexafluoride in degrees centigrade. A method is presented for the determination of hydrogen fluoride in uranium hexafluoride by measuring the freezing point of the liquid phase and correlating its composition to the gross composition. The precision of the method varies with the ratio of the liquid volume of the uranium hexafluoride to the total volume of the freezing point cell and with the concentration of hydrogen fluoride in the uranium hexafluoride.
