CALCULATION OF CONTROL ROD WORTH

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4807416

An examination and comparison was made of the accuracy, ease of utilization, and availability of various analytical techniques and machine codes used to calculate control rod worth. Special attention is given to cylindrical control rods, such as are used in the POPR. The general approach selected is few- group diffusion theory with blackness theory boundary conditions. Several specific problem areas associated with this method are investigatedn methods of determining boundary conditions to apply at the control rod surface; methods of averaging boundary conditions over an epithermal energy group; and the effects of the curvature of the rod surface on the boundary conditions to be applied at the rod surface. The results of the investigations are used to select a consistent technique for calculating the worth of cylindrical control rods. The accuracy of the technique is compared with that of other methods. The selected technique is then used to determine that the POPR control rods are worth 20% DELTA k/k. (auth)
