S>An instrument consisting of an ionization chamber and an electronic amplifier, which is designed for the measurement of ionization currents, is described. The factors prejudicial to the operation of the chamber are analyzed with a quantitative evaluation of the saturation thresholds for recombination and space charge; the spontaneous ionization caused by cosmic radiation is determined and negated by means of a second compensating chamber. The characteristics of the vacuum tubes and the direct-coupling amplifiers are described, and the total amplification of the apparatus is determined. The sensitivity of the instrument permits ionization currents of 2 x 10/sup -16/ amp to be measured. (tr-auth)
