Study of the reaction kinetics of new product formation in aqueous solution of organic materials is helpful for determining the intermediate products formed during the radiolysis of water and may suggest new paths for the radiosynthesis of organics. The effect of Co/sup 60/ gamma quanta on aqueous pyridine solutions wss investigated at a dose rate of 3.5 r/sec under an O/sub 2/ pressure of 15 atm by determining the amount of oxypyridine formed. Ultraviolet spectra indicated that the product was 4-oxypyridine with absorption maxima of 265 m mu at pH = 10 to 11 and 257 M mu at pH = 5.5. The simultaneous formation of H/sub 2/O/sub 2/ was also observed but its yield decreased with increasing pyridine concentration while that of oxypyridine continued to increase. The radiochemical yield of oxypyridine follows the equation given by M. A. Proskurnin (Doklady Akad. Nauk S.S.S.R., 135: 1446 (1960)). The yield was also found to increase with the pH, probably because in acid solutions the pyridine is present in its ionic form and therefore the H/sup +/ ions stabilize the original molecule. (TTT)
