THE QUESTION OF THE PRODUCT YIELD OF THE DEEP SPALLATION REACTION Bi$sup 209$ (p ,xn, yp) (in Russian)
BS>p 209/ (p,xn)Po/sup reaction cross section involving the bombardment of Bi with 135-Mev protons (B. N. Belyaev et al., Doklady Akad. Nauk S.S.S.R., 140, 337(1961)), the products of spallation caused by protons of the same energy were studied. This involved consideration of the transformation chain starting with Po/sup 206/ and ending with Pt/sup 195/. The composition of the radiochemically separated Bi, Pb, Tl, and Au fractions was determined by means of a scintillation gamma spectrometer with a NaI(Tl) crystal and a single-channel analyzer, the activty being measured in a 4 pi geometry with a CsI(Tl) crystal. Quantitative determination of the individual radioisotopes was obtained from the complex decay curve. The cumulative Tl/sup 202/ yield included all the nuclei of the chain with a mass number of 202, except Pb/sup 202/ . The overall yield of the Po/supl 202/ yields Tl/sup 202/ chain is equal the tenfold yield of Tl/sub (cumu/) this point lies substantially below the experimental yield curve. The low yield values are probably due to the assumption that the Bi/sup 202/ yields Po/sup 202/ transition does not take place; in that case the ratio of the probabilities of the Bi/sup 202/ yields Pb/sup 202/ and Bi/sup 202/ transformations is equal to about 5.
