A study of the system PuO/sub 2/ ZrO/sub 2/ undertaken to provide a phase diagram, the initial prerequisite to fuel evaluation. The phase equilibria were studied by x-ray diffraction and metallographic techniques. A single-phase, face-centered cubic solid solution exists up to 80 mole% ZrO/sub 2/. The region from 80 to 99.8 mole% ZrO/sub 2/ consists of two phases: monoclinic ZrO/sub 2/ and a face-centered cubic PuO/sub 2/-80 mole% ZrO/sub 2/ solid solutlon. The transformation temperatures of the two-phase compositions increase with ZrO/sub 2/ concentration in a curvilinear fashion and reach a maximum temperature of l200 deg C at the pure component. The experimental liquidus was continuous throughout the entire composition range. An addition of 0.2 mole% PuO/sub 2/ dimensionally stabilizes monoclinic ZrO/sub 2/. (auth)
