IRRADIATION METHOD OF CONVERTING HYDROCARBONS

Patent ·
OSTI ID:4806646

A method for irradiating hydrocarbons is described which enables the ratios of radiolytic products to be changed, e.g., to increase the amount of branching. In this method, a deposit of the hydrocarbon from 10 to 0.1 times the monomolecular average thickness is formed on an inert solid which has a specific surface >1m/sup 2/, the deposit is irradiated to a dose >100,000 rad, and the solid is separate from the deposit. The solid may be a metal, oxide, sulfide, halide, or clay. Examples of the method are given in which pentane is irradiated. (D.L.C.)
