A study was made to see if this reaction occurs only by compound nucleus formation or involves some contribution of direct interaction. In the first case, the angular distribution of inelastic neutrons is symetric about 90 deg . In the second case, this distribution must be asymetric and must change slowly with energy of incident neutrons. The neutrons corresponding at the excitation of a given level of the residual nucleus are selected by their coincidence with the gamma rays of deexcitation of this level. From the results of measurements on iron, iodine, and bismuth and of other laboratories on different elements, it is concluded that generally, the inelastic scattering of neutrons of some Mev occurs only by compound nucleus.
