VARIATION OF TOWNSEND'S SECOND COEFFICIENT IN A ELECTRODELESS DISCHARGE IN CROSSED ELECTRIC AND MAGNETIC FIELDS

Journal Article · · Proc. Phys. Soc. (London)
From measurement of breakdown potentials in an electrodeless discharge in a magnetic field, values of gamma /sub H/, Townsend's second coefficient in a magnetic field, were calculated. The curve between gamma /sub H/ and H is hyperbolic in nature. For 10, 25, snd 57.5 mu pressure, the magnetic field varied from 0 to 60 gauss. Assuming gamma = A (E/p) + STAB/(E/p)! + C, which is valid if E can be regarded as constant, an expression was deduced for the variation of gamma /sub H/ with magrnetic field in an electrodeless discharge. The formula can explain the observed variation of gamma /sub H/ with magnetic field, and the quantitative agreements is also satisfactory. It is suggested that the incorporation of the variation of gamma with magnetic field with the concept of equivalent pressure will explain the experimental results better. (auth)
