THE INTERPRETATION OF BREAKDOWN CHARACTERISTICS OF ELECTRODELESS DISCHARGES IN TRANSVERSE MAGNETIC FIELDS

Journal Article · · Proc. Phys. Soc. (London)
It was suggested that the equivalent pressure concept for the influence of a transverse magnetic field on electrical breakdown in uniform fields can be extended to explain the phenomena observed recentiy in electrodeless discharges. It is pointed out that these measurements are possibly unreliable because of a restricted E x H drift of electrons and the consequent influence of the tube walls. A comparison of theory and experiment on the basis of such measurements is therefore unsatisfactory. (auth)
