Reduction of X-Ray Lethality in Mice by Agents Affecting the Reticuloendothelial System
Mortality of mice irradiated several weeks after administration of mycobacterium tuberculosis and zymosan was significantly reduced. There was no accelerated recovery of hemopoietic and lymphatic tissue in the protected animals. Certain enhanced activities of the reticuloendothelial system related to increased nonspeciflc resistance were still evident after lethal irradiation. A correlation between resistance to near-lethal irradiation and certain parameters reflecting the functional state of phagocytic elements of the reticuloendothelia1 system is postulated.
