An energy transfer circult is designed for efficient energy transfer from an inductive store to an inductive load, such as a gas discharge apparatus comprising a transformer whose secondary winding is the pinched ring discharge. The circuit comprises a storage inductor, means for charging the store, and an inductive load and a capacitor connectable in parallel with the store. After the store is charged and the load and capacitor are connected to it, a resonant circuit is thereby formed which oscillates for at least one half cycle at the resonant frequency and the current in the load increases to a maximum value.
