IMPROVEMENTS IN OR RELATING TO RADIO-FREQUENCY PULSE GENERATING CIRCUITS

Patent ·
OSTI ID:4127252
A circuit for generating a r-f pulse of constant amplitude is patented. The circuit consists of a tank circuit, having a capacitor, inductor, and spark gap in series, and at least one drive circuit, having a capacitor and inductor connected in series across the spark gap. The resonant frequency of the drive circuit is the same as, or an odd subharmonic of, the resonant frequency of the tank circuit. When the spark gap breaks down, the tank and drive circuits oscillate with the drive-circuit current larger than the tank-circuit current. The currents are in such phase relationship that the resistive losses in the tank circuit are compensated by power transferred from the drive circuit via the spark gap. The amplitude of the pulse is thereby held constant during a portion of the pulse. (M.P.G.)
