A reactor fuel sheath is designed with fins arranged for optimum heat transfer from the fuel to the coolant. The fins are arranged into an even number of groups of helical fin elements separated by longitudinal channels. The fins are shaped so that a coolant entering one group with a velocity in one direction lengthwise of the can will be moved between the fins to one channel, while a coolant entering an adjacent group with a velocity in the same direction will be moved toward the same channel. Thus, a circulatory movement is imposed on the coolant, improving the heat transfer. (D.L.C.)
