A nuclear reactor fuel element of the elongated tubular type is designed wherein cylindrical fissionable ceramic fuel pellets are pressed radially by a spring and wedge disk into tight contact engagement against the inner surface of a tubular housing. The pellets define a central opening and radial passages to facilitate the transfer of heat to the tube and also to provide space to receive fission-product gases. This design has the advantage of facilitating higher burnup of the fissionable material and allows for expansion of the fuel pellets due to high temperature and neutron irradiation. (AEC)
