IMPROVEMENTS IN OR RELATING TO MEASURING APPARATUS

Patent ·
OSTI ID:4804222
A method is given for measuring thickness of material in the form of tubes, solids with holes, or other body shapes where the wall thickness is difficult to measure. The method comprises irradiating the outside surface of the body with alpha, beta, and/or gamma rays, passing a gas at the same time through the cavity within the body, and subsequently measuring the ionization of the gas to give an indication of the material thickness. Beta particles give the most useful range of material thickness, and the ionization may be measured with a Geiger counter or ionization chamber. The method is particularly applicable to hollow turbine blades with cooling holes. (D.L.C.)
