THE LOW ENERGY SCATTERING OF POSITRONS BY HYDROGEN ATOMS

The effect of the real or virtual formation of positronium on the low energy elastic scattering of positrons by hydrogen atoms is estimated by a perturbation method, in which that part of the scattering due to the static field of the hydrogen atom is automatically allowed for. Numerical results indicate that the positron is attracted to the atom at low energies, and that virtual formation positronium is extremely important. (auth)
