Elastic scattering of positrons by hydrogen atoms

The Kohn variational method is applied to the s-wave elastic scattering of positrons by hydrogen atoms. The trial wave function is taken to include a function allowing for the effect of virtual positronium as well as correlation functions. The size of the resulting phase shifts indicates that the proposed virtual positronium function allows for the polarization of the atom, and is believed to be equivalent to several correlation functions.
