THE EARLY EFFECT OF IONIZING RADIATION (Co$sup 60$) ON THE HUMAN BRAIN (in German)

Journal Article · · Strahlentherapie (West Germany)
OSTI ID:4804079
A study of ll human bralns after tumor surgery, followed by local radio- cobalt bead therapy, and a survival time of 6 hours to 6 weeks is reported. The radiation doses were 10800 r and 5400 r. Macroscopic investigations of the brains showed mass displacements, compression signs, and a considerable edema. The hlstologic results allow the following conclusions: A necrosis of all kinds of tissue can be expected at a radlation dose of 5000 to l0000 r. The tissue damage is completed after l7 days at a dose of 5000 r, and after 4 days at a dose of l0000 r. The maximum width of the necrotic area is about 4 to 6 mm at 5400 r, and about l0 to l2 mm at l0800 r. A localization of the necrosis by connective tissue occurs after 6 weeks. There are no radiation changes at doses below 5000 r single irradiation. This can be said, with certainty, by determination of the isodose curves and by transferring them to the tlssue. The results obtained after use of ionizing radiation on the human brain, described as early changes,'' are compared with experimental data in the literature. A general agreement has been found.
