S>The nature of the bonding in U/sub 2/Se/sub 3/, U/sub 3/Se/sub 4/, and USe was investigated in the presence and absence of air using mercury bichloride as the reagent. In the absence of air the gain in degree of oxidation for the uranium was about 3.3 for all three compounds. In the presence of air the oxidation degree is equal to 6. The equations for the complete reactions both in the presence and absence of air are given. Because of the number of electrons set in action per atom of uranium in each group of reactions and because of the final oxidation degree of the metal, a zero oxidation degree is assigned to the moment of reaction with the Hg/sup 2+/ ions. The resuits lead to the conclusion that the U-Se bonds are covalent. (J.S.R.)
