EVIDENCE OF THE CHEMICAL NATURE OF URANIUM SELENIDES (in French)
The reaction of uranium polyselenide USe/sub 3/ and the three allotropic varieties of the selenide USe/sub 2/ with an aqueous solution of silver nitrate was studied. The reactions of USe/sub 2/ can be written as 3 USe/sub 2/+ 12 AgNO/ sub 3/+ 2 H/sub 2/O -6 Ag/sub 2/Se + 3 UO/sub 2/(NO/sub 2/)/sub 2/ + 2 NO + 4 HNO/ sub 3/. Those of USe/sub 3/ can be written as 3 USe/sub 3/+ 12 AgNO/sub 3/+ 2 H/ sub 2/O -6 Ag/sub 2/Se+ 3 UO/sub 2/(NO/sub 3/)/sub 2/+ 2 NO + 3 Se + 4 HNC/sub 3/. The reactions show that the compounds are ionic with respect to the U-Se bonds. Moreover. the particular case of USe/sub 3/, where one atom of selenium out of three does not participate in the double decomposition reaction, reveals the existence of covalence bonding. Because of the tendency of selenium to chain arrangement and the degree of oxidation of uranium, it is thought that covalent bonding is established between one selenium atom and the selenium atoms surrounding it. The latter selenium atoms are then connected to the tetravalent uranium ions of the lattice by electrostatic attraction. (J.S.R.)
