RE-EVALUATION OF ENERGY ABSORPTION RATE IN OMR'S

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4803723
The amount of energy absorbed by the organic coolants of the OMRE, Piqua, and OMCR reactors was calculated. Fast neutron energy deposition was determined using a modifled version of the FORM code. A detailed description of the code modification is presented. A method was developed to calculate the fraction of the gamma energy produced which is absorbed by organic coolant inside the core. Gamma leakage from the core was handled using a modified version of the GRACE II code. The energy absorbed by the coolant of the OMRE resulting from fission product betas escaping a clad fuel region was calculated. The results are presented in a manner such that energy absorption rates for additional OMR- type reactors can be easily determined without having to repeat lengthy and detailed calculations. (auth)
