ENERGY ABSORPTION RATES IN OMR COOLANTS

The amount of energy absorbed by the organic coolants of the OMRE and Piqua reactors was calculated. New techniques were developed for calculating energy deposition by neutrons, gamma rays, and beta particles. Fast neutron energy absorption was determined, using a modified version of the FORM code. A method was developed te calculate the fraction of the gamma energy produced which is absorbed by organic coolant inside the core. Gamma leakage from the core was handled by using a modified version of the GRACE II code. The energy absorbed by the coolant of the OMRE resulting from fission-product betas escaping the clad fuel regions was also determined. The percent of the total reactor power absorbed by the coolants of the OMRE and Piqua reactors is 904 and 2.94, respectively. These results are presented in such a manner that energy absorption rates for future OMR-type reactors may be easily extrapolated. (auth)
