The intensities of various emission bands in ZnS single crystals were measured in dependence on the 60 kv electron beam density (10/sup -10/ up to 1 amp/cm/sup 2/) and the temperature (80 to 450 deg K). The linear luminescent characteristics at low electron beam densities change into some bands in a sublinear region, in which the luminescence increases with the root of the excitation intensity, and gradually become linear again. The sublinear region is displaced with increasing temperature to lower electron beam densities. At 10/ sup -1/ amp/cm/ and over, site heating by the electron beam plays a roll. This is shown in estimations of the temperature increase and temperature coefficient. If the temperature coefficient is negative, the warming is brought about in such a way that the luminescence increases more slowly or even with increasing excitation intensity decreases. The luminescence increases superlinearly with the excitation when the luminescence yield has a positive temperature coefficient. ln the crystals studied there was no real saturation of the luminescence. These results are in agreement with the Riehl-Schon model for the light mechanism in ZnS phosphors. The concept of saturation of light centers was not necessary. (tr-auth)
