THE NATURE OF RADIATION HAZARDS AND PRECAUTIONS AGAINST THEM

Journal Article · · Roy. Soc.Health J.
OSTI ID:4803440
The biological effects of radiation are reviewed from the standpoint of protection of personnel engaged in work with atomic energy. The genetic effects, somatic effects, especially the increased incidence in leukemia resulting from radiation exposure, and the hazards from the ingestion, inhalation and skin contamination by radioactive materials are discussed. Genetic hazards to the population from man-made radiation are considered. The importance of the film badge is stressed for determining the weekly dose of each occupationally exposed worker. The film badge should be supplemented by quartz fiber electrometers for short-term measurements of radiation dose. The importance of constant vigilance in accident prevention and continuous monitoring of the air, gases, and liquid effluents from atomic energy plants is also stressed. (C.H.)
