An analytical solvent extraction method for separating neptunium from plutonium, americium, curium, uranium, thorium, and fission products using tri- iso-octylamine and thenoyltrifluoroacetone is described. Neptunium is separated from the bulk of the plutonium, americium, curium, and fission products by the extraction of neptuniumIV) into tri-iso-octylamine dissolved in xylene from an aqueous nitric acid reducing solution. The neptuniumbearing organic solution is then scrubbed with a nitric acid reducing solution to achieve further purification. Final purification is obtained by stripping the neptunium from the tri-iso-octylamine -xylene solution into dilute hydrochloric acid and then extracting the neptunium(IV) into thenoyltri-fuoroacetone dissolved in xylene. The method is used routinely to separate neptunium-237 from other alpha emitters and fission products in preparation for a quantitative neptunium-237 measurement by alpha-counting methods. (auth)
