THE CHROMATOGRAPHIC SEPARATION OF RADIOACTIVE ELEMENTS ON PAPER IMPREGNATED WITH MINERAL ION EXCHANGERS
Filter paper was impregnated with zirconium phosphate and zirconium tungstate, rinsed, dried, and cut into bands l2 cm long and 2 cm wide. The bands were hung in an atmosphere of water vapor at 60 deg C and scanned with a Geiger counter at regular intervals to determine the short-lived radioisotopes. The following separations were carried out: Pb/sup 211/ - Tl/sup 207/--Tl/sup 204/ (eluant HCl, time 5 min); Pb/sup 212/-Bi/ sup 212/Ba/sup 140/-La/sup 140/(eluant HCl or NH/sub 4/NO/sub 3/, time 30 min), Sr/sup 9 Y/sup 90/ (eluant HCl or NH/sub 4/NO/sub 3/, time 30 min), Ra/sup 228/ -- Ac/sup me 20 min); and monovalent from trivalent thallium allows a quantitative determination of the 2 valence states of the same element. The separation of radium and francium by a rapid method is of great importance because Fr/sup 223/ has a half-life of only 21 min. (OID)
