Fused Na//sub 2/WO/sub 4/ having a normal tsotopic composition was contacted at 720, 745 and 764 deg C with oxygen containing l.360 at.% O/sub 18/. The exposed area of the salt was 4 x 0.5 cm with sample wetghts of l.0, 4.4 and 7.4 grams of Na/sub 2/WO/sub 4/. An activation energy of 38.4 kcal/mol was found from the formula V = N/sub q/ exp (-E/RT), where V is the reaction rate in molecules cm/sub -2/ sec/sub =-1/, and N/sub q/ is the number of collisions with the surface in molecules cm/sub -2/ sec/sub -1/. Reaction rate constants were calculated from the formula Kt = ln l00/(l00- alpha ), where K is the reaction rate constant, t is the time and alpha is the degree of exchange in percent. The apparent activation energies were found to be 30.6, 22.7 and l3.2 kcal/mol for tbe l.0, 4.4 and 7.4 gram samples. Extrapolation to an infinitely thin layer gave an activation energy of 33.5 kcal/mol. (TTT)
