Reaction kinetics in sub-micronic powders the ZrO$sub 2$--CaO system

The kinetic study of the reaction ZrO/sub 2/ + CaO in mixtures of submicronic crystals in the temperature range 900 to 1150 deg C shows that the reaction takes place according to an equation of the Avrami-Erofeev type: 1 - z = exp (-Kt/sup n/) with n < 1, and the factor controlling the reaction rate is the formation of new germs. Between 900 and l00 deg C, the activation energy was also determined at 53.9 kcal/mol. Over 1000 deg C the phase transitions influence considerably the reaction mechanism. (auth)
