ELECTROCHEMICAL ASPECTS OF THE CORROSION OF AUSTENITIC STAINLESS STEEL IN A NITRIC MEDIUM AND IN THE PRESENCE OF HEXAVALENT CHROMIUM (in French)

The corrosion of austenitic stainless steels in boiling nitric acid increases markedly when the medium contains hexavalent chromium ions. Because of several redox phenomena, the potential of the steel generally changes with time. Measurements show a relation between the weight loss and the potential. Additions of Mn(VII) and Ce(IV) are compared with that of Cr(VI), and show that the relation is a general one. The attack of the metal in oxidizing media is largely intergranular, leading to exfoliation of the grains. Also, even in the absence of any other oxidizing reaction, the current density observed when the steel is anodically polarized under potentiostatic conditions does not correspond to the actual weight loss of the metal.
