SEPARATING TANTALUM AND COLUMBIUM BY SOLVENT EXTRACTION: HF-HCl-DIETHYL KETONE SYSTEM

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4802595
A procedure is described for the separation of Ta, 99.4% pure, and Nb, 97.2% pure, by the selective transfer of Ta into diethyl ketone from a solution of 2 N HF and 1 N HCl. The relatively low acid concentration necessary for Ta transfer and the excellent selectivity of the system recommend its use for the separation of Ta and Nb from oxide mixtures obtained by chemical extraction of Geomines slag, or similar materials.
